I’ve been obsessed with American desserts for a while where I’ve been busily baking peanut butter cups, key lime pie and smores brownie. Then I was asked whether I would be interested in The Desserts of New York by Yasmin Newman. Yes, yes I am. So here we are and as I flick through this part cookbook, part travel guide and part journal and it is definitely my kind of book.

Yasmin up and moved her family to New York for 3 months to eat all the New York desserts (I feel like I’m talking to my soul mate here). I can’t help but be in awe that she not only wrote about her journey but she made so many New York inspired recipes to try at home – from luxe oreos to black sesame cream puffs and chocolate speculaas deliciousness (yep these are on my bake list). She takes inspiration from Dominique Ansel’s cookie shots and Christina Tosi’s crack pie to classics in the New York Cheesecake, pumpkin pie waffles and smores bombe alaska.

Trawling through the suburbs of New York and the cafes, you begin to understand the culture of New York and why food is the way it is in New York. Beautiful natural photography captures the food and New York streets perfectly. This is a book for those who are in love with American desserts and want to bake their own at home and also for those who want to get an in on the New York dessert scene. Will definitely be using this book when I head to New York one day.
