Hui Lau Shan (許留山), Hong Kong

Hong Kong is littered with the dessert chain Hui Lau Shan. I swear every corner I turned, it kept popping up. Hui Lau shan specialises in mango desserts which I was so excited about. Reality is always so different sigh :/

I decided to get the tasting platter as there were just too many choices. We’ll start off with the mini crystal jelly with mango. This actually tasted alright, yummy mango sorbet with clear jelly. However, it was nothing extraordinary, just jelly and ice-cream.

The mini rice balls with mango juice was so disgusting. The mini rice balls are tang yuan (湯圓 – kind of like glutinous dumplings eaten during the Lantern Festival). The rice balls had no filling, just bland and hard, complemented by a sour mango juice.

Mango mochi with mango slice *shivers*. The mochi was way too gooey, and this dish actually highlighted the fact that for a place that specialises in mangoes they really suck at it. Mangoes were sour, artificial and old.

This left a very bad impression for me and I would not want the same pain inflicted on you. Just run away, don’t even bother considering this place.
