Tai Cheong’s egg tarts became famous when Hong Kong’s last British governor, Chris Pattern, declared it to be the best egg tarts in the world. The first and main branch is located in Central – which was a bit far away for me so I went to the Mong Kok East MTR station shop.
There are two types of egg tart – one with kind of a shortbread crust and another with puff pastry. I got the shortbread crush one :) My egg tarts were piping hot with a silky smooth custard flavour, followed by the buttery shortbread. The egg tarts tasted good, but I don’t believe they are the best egg tarts in the world. I probably wouldn’t make the effort to go to a shop next time I’m in Hong Kong unless I just pass it – twas alright but I’m sure you’ll find awesome egg tarts/food anywhere in Hong Kong.
